|Look fab for less? Count me in!|
Between tuition, housing, books and student loans, a tight budget is a fact of life for most college students. Because of this, buying the hottest designer clothes is usually out of the question. But just because you can’t buy the latest Louboutins or Prada bag, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice fashion.
With a little research, you can easily find the top fashion trends for less at discount retailers like Target, Old Navy, and Forever 21. Here is a breakdown of some of the top trends for spring/summer and where to find them on a college budget.
Red pants – This season, red is all the rage. From ‘70s style wide-leg trousers to skinny jeans, red pants are the epitome of chic this spring. Though red pants from designers like Valentino are retailing at more than $300, fashionistas on a budget can find a similar pair from ASOS on sale for $25. Want to update your skinny jeans? ASOS also has a pair of red skinnies for $37.65.
Maxi dress/skirt – The maxi trend has been around for a few seasons now, and it doesn’t look to be going anywhere. A floor-length skirt or dress is flattering on every figure, and the popularity of the trend has allowed for a large variety of colors and prints to be available for every budget. Forever 21 has a large variety of maxi skirts and dresses, all for under $30. For day, try this $20 floral print maxi topped with a denim jacket and an armful of bangles. To up the ante at night, try this $15 halter maxi dress with a pair of killer heels.
High-waisted denim shorts – Denim shorts are a summer staple for most college students, and this year, teeny-tiny shorts are out, and keeping with the ’70s trend, high-waisted shorts are in. Old Navy has a casual pair to wear over a bikini or with a striped top. For a fancier feel, try these high-waisted, pleated shorts from Urban Outfitters or herringbone shorts from Forever 21. With a tucked in printed top and a skinny belt, add a pair of heels to easily transition these shorts from day to night.
Color blocking – Arguably one of the biggest trends of the spring and summer, you can’t go wrong with color blocking. The sharp lines, especially with vibrant colors, provide a classic look. Try this sweet, $20 color block dress from dEliAs for a feminine look. For work or your summer internship, pair this $28 Thakoon for Target color block shift dress with a blazer and flats. For a sexy nighttime look, this $42 one-shoulder, fitted dress from Macy’s will make sure you standout. Want more bang for your buck with the color blocking trend? Pair a bright colored mini skirt (a steal for Forever 21 at only $7!) with a basic tank or V-neck top. Black and white is always a classic combination, but for a vibrant, summer look, pair a hot pink mini with an orange tank.
