Healthy Snack Choices (Dorm Friendly!)

Room service in college, please?

We’ve all experienced the dorm life: tight spaces, dirty bathrooms, loud neighbors, and nothing but a mini-fridge to keep all of our food in. With such a small space, it’s hard to resist the urge to simply opt for fast food when craving a late-night snack or running late for class. Here are some deliciously healthy snack foods that every student or working twenty-something should keep close at hand for those unexpected hunger pains.

Throw a handful of nuts into a plastic baggy and toss them into your purse for a great on-the-go snack. Almonds, walnuts, and pistachios are just a few of my favorites. You can also add in some pretzels and raisins for a quick and easy trail-mix. Or you can try some of these simple trail-mix recipes!

I love how versatile hummus is! It goes great slathered on toast, with carrots, celery, or pita chips. Because it tastes delicious with so many different things, hummus is definitely a staple in my food supply. Plus, hummus contains a ton of Omega 3 fatty acids which is great for improving intelligence (hello A+!) and maintaining a healthy heart. Also, hummus as a whole contains nutrients that help promote good quality sleep and can uplift one’s mood. With reasons like that, everyone should include a little hummus in their lives.

Laughing Cow Cheese Wedges:
These little mini cheese wheels are actually a healthier alternative to string cheese, and they come in more flavors. It tastes great paired with a few pretzels, crackers, or even on their own. It’s also a great source of calcium, a nutrient that we tend to neglect as a result of our busy college and working lives. So you have no excuse not to throw one of these mini wedges into your bag as you head out the door.

A Sweet Cereal:
I don’t know about you all, but I have quite the sweet tooth that gets pretty tough to manage. I typically get cravings for something sweet after dinner or late-night. A little secret I learned during my freshman year was to keep a bag of Froot Loops around so I could grab a handful whenever I needed something sugary. It may not be the healthiest snack in the world, but it will keep you from binging on cookies and brownies! Plus, there are lots of yummy, sweet, and yet still healthy cereals out there in the market these days (Check out this article from Women’s Health on some healthy cereal ideas).

Crystal Light Beverage Mix:

You’re probably thinking about how water doesn’t even count as a snack right about now. Although it may not be, drinking water is actually a great way to curb your hunger and keep your energy up. Us twenty-somethings lead pretty hectic lifestyles, and we need to be properly hydrated! Also, people often confuse being thirsty with being hungry, so before you grab that bag of pretzels try drinking a bottle of water first. Crystal Light is a low-calorie powder mix that you can add to water to make staying hydrated a lot more exciting. There are so many flavors to try, and my personal favorite is ‘green tea peach mango.’

What are your go-to snacks when you’re in a rush?
