From the Mouth of the Designers: Inspiration is Everything

Where do the ideas come from?

Inspiration is everything in fashion. The lovely people at Women’s Wear Daily, bless them, talked to several designers about their inspiration for the Spring 2012 season.

Ever see a look go down the runway and think, “How did Designer X come up with that?!” Well, wonder no more. This is what the designers said about their Spring 2012 inspirations:

A modern take on the evocativeness of the Twenties, the demure detailing of the Victorian era, combined with the denim patchworkings from the restless grunge decade.
— Charlotte Ronson

You will see more maxidresses, more tuxedo looks, cropped pants, safari-inspired silhouettes, colored denim, maxiskirts and jumpsuits — I’m obsessed.
— Rachel Zoe

I envisioned a girl on a trip to a deserted house designed by Mexican architect Luis Barragan, discovering trunks of sun-drenched clothing.
— Rebecca Minkoff

This may be hard to imagine, but this season is a mishmash of everything I love. You could describe it as the Rat Pack going to India on the Soul Train.
— Gwen Stefani of L.A.M.B.

It’s called Beginnings, it is all about light and luminosity, hope and happiness…it celebrates a nomadic vitality, strength and resilience in an infinity of variations.
— Diane von Furstenberg

We designed while watching movies from the 1940s in a hotel room in Vietnam. Those films, along with traditional Vietnamese craft, informed our collection.
— Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock of Vena Cava

Seventies surfing, gypsies, parachutes, cholos and a Herzog & de Meuron building in Munich. Enough said.
— Marcus Wainwright and David Neville of Rag & Bone

Sports in black, white and gold.
— Cynthia Rowley
