|We’re always down for tangoing.|
If you haven’t already heard of YourTango.com, maybe you want to check it out! The web magazine is full of everything you need to know about love, romance, and relationships. Editor Natalie Gontcharova talks to me everything about sexting, trashy T.V., and advice for aspiring journalists.
Love Twenty: What inspired you to write?
Natalie: I love to express myself with words and I’ve always looked up to people who make the process seem playful and easy, who write the way they speak and manage to do it eloquently.
Love Twenty: What is YourTango.com?
Natalie: A web magazine about love, relationships, and celeb gossip. I run Love Buzz, a blog about the latest news in love, sex, and relationships.
Love Twenty: How did YourTango.com start?
Natalie: It was launched by entrepreneur Andrea Miller as a print magazine (Tango Mag) in 2005, and relaunched as web-only publication YourTango in 2008.
Love Twenty: How was your journalism/writing experience in school?
Natalie: I went to GWU in Washington, D.C. The journalism program was very politically oriented, but I ended up learning a lot that helped me in the future.
Love Twenty: Any advice to aspiring journalists like myself? 🙂
Natalie: Yes! Every little detail counts. You won’t be taken seriously if you don’t fact-check and copy edit everything meticulously. Also, always have a positive attitude because you never know if that could get you the job.
Love Twenty: What are your duties as editor like?
Natalie: I research topics, assign and edit for Love Buzz, which has tons of new content each day. Sometimes it’s a challenge to stay up-to-date all the time, but that’s part of what I love about it. I also manage YourTango’s content partnerships with other websites. We have lots of college-related content, too, like did you know that 80 percent of college students sext? And that most college guys actually want to get married? I definitely didn’t!
Love Twenty: What has the response been like to YourTango.com?
Natalie: The readership is growing and our readers are very active on the AskYourTango feature, where readers can ask experts a question, and through Twitter (@yourtango) and Facebook. Everyone has something to say about relationships, whether it’s good, bad, or just plain weird.
Love Twenty: At the end of the day you’re satisfied when…?
Natalie: All my work is done and I can just make dinner and watch the trashiest television imaginable.
Love Twenty: Writer’s block cure?
Natalie: Tell myself it doesn’t have to be perfect at first, and you can always revise.
