Moving Abroad: Part Two

What’s your next step?

You’ve been accepted, your visa is in your passport and you’re excited to go. All you need to do now is create a plan and that involves getting you and your things to your brand new home!

1. Plan Your Move Over
So your request for a visa has been accepted, eh? Well now it’s time to put together a plan of action. This may include selling some of your worldly possessions, packing them up, and putting them into storage or shipping them over. This also means figuring out where you’re going to live and how much of a budget you have until you find a job.

2. Packing your life in a suitcase
Choose what you’ll need and want with you immediately. Bring these possessions in a carry on and a checked luggage. Depending on what you decide, you may sell your other possessions, put them in storage, or have them shipped to you. This all depends on your final plans and if you ever decide to go home.

3. Make a Life For Yourself
Get out in the world now that you’re where you spent all this time preparing to be! Join clubs, take walks — just get out of the house so you can make new friends but remember…

4. Stay in Touch
We all know your life will be fabulous. You’ll be doing fabulous things with awesome new people and you’ll have only a small amount of time to dedicate to those of us living across the pond. However, remember that your family and friends are just as important as the people in your new life. Invest a few moments every week to Skyping, Texting, BBMing — whatever works for you to let them know you still care and want to be part of their lives!

5. Have a Trial and Error Period
I want to try out a year abroad to see if I like it. My commitment time will actually be 18 months, and after that if I’ve had enough or it isn’t what I expected, I will move back. Always know that you don’t have to stay some place where you are not happy! That is why I suggest investing in an open-end departure ticket. This means you’ll have a voucher which you can cash just in case things don’t work out, you get home sick, or it just isn’t what you want.

Good luck with your move!
